Dubbed Club James, for obvious reasons, the venue was Goldstein’s idea, to keep Hollywood parties out of his house, but still close by. The result is a house so unique, so carefully crafted and fresh, that Goldstein wants everyone to be able to tour it and be inspired by it. James Goldstein worked with the designer for years to ensure every little detail was in tune with the overall theme of ‘organic’ architecture. At the time, the house had fallen into disrepair and was in dire need of a makeover, so Goldstein reached out to Lautner to help bring the residence back to its former glory. Each space is open and offers stunning views of downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, with glass walls throughout that serve to blend the indoors with the outdoors. The concrete-and-wood house was built into the sandstone ledge of a hill, and it’s a testament to the connection between man and nature.

GMD's research center, staff, collections, and main gallery are based in McNeal Hall on the St. Paul campus. The building links an original Home Economics hall (pictured above), where Harriet and Vetta Goldstein taught from 1910–1949, with an addition from 1976 (pictured left), the year the museum was established. The Goldstein Museum of Design membership program was founded in 1976 by noted fashion journalist Margot Siegel to enhance Minnesota’s design museum.

LACMA might be a de facto museum of contemporary art, but frankly it’s not a very good one. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is at a critical juncture in its efforts to push its Peter Zumthor-designed building project closer to the finish line. If you've visited Goldstein Museum of Design, you can write your review below!
From the late 1920s through the 1950s, Art in Every day Life was used in classes at colleges and universities across the country, helping countless students gain the ability to recognize and create design harmony in their lives. By the 1930s, so many students had learned how to examine design problems that even major industrial designers noticed women demanding better-designed products. “There's no mistake where we're highlighting the city of Los Angeles in the background, and people are coming for this immersive experience where they can come and feel what it's like to be part of this Hollywood lifestyle for a minute. With the house having this incredible pedigree, all of the incredible shots that have happened here, the events that have happened here” says Spencer. Rather than enlarging its physical footprint, LACMA aims to broaden its cultural reach, influence and presence in the West, and globally — a benign Manifest Destiny for the California visual arts scene. While this can be an exciting time, mental health issues in the college demographic have grown exponentially in... Years in the making, it features an 85 foot infinity-edged cantilevered concrete foot lap pool.
With the expansion of McNeal Hall in 1976, the Goldstein Gallery (now the Goldstein Museum of Design) was dedicated as a tribute to Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Their leadership helped shape design education across the country and set the direction for the College of Design. Their legacy lives on in the growing collection of design objects and the many exhibitions, past, present, and future. The primary focus of the Goldstein Museum of Design's collection is on costume, with around 21,000 items dating back to 1790.

Govan does not expect any conflicts of interest to arise, and points out that many arts leaders occupy multiple board seats across the city and the country. Wynn, who is a LACMA board co-chair, has already given LACMA $50 million — one of the largest single gifts in LACMA’s history — Govan notes, adding that he doesn’t know how much more the L.A. In an interview with The Times, Govan emphasized that continual expansion along Wilshire Boulevard would yield diminishing returns. LACMA is instead developing a “strategic plan of regional partnerships” with museums — large and small — in order to pull more of its collection out of storage, and make it accessible to as many people as possible. As instructors, they were thoughtful and encouraging, inspiring students with their passion for supporting good design.

His work is not limited to just the architecture of the house; Lautner also designed the interiors, the windows, lighting systems, all the furniture, the rugs, and other details. Meet the staff, students, faculty, and advisory board members who make the Goldstein Museum of Design's work possible. Winner of the 2019 Interior Design Educators Council Media Award, the Jack Lenor Larsen Oral History Project was conducted by Professor Stephanie Zollinger. A noted scholar of Jack Lenor Larsen, Dr. Zollinger interviewed many of Larsen’s former designers, employees, and colleagues to help preserve his legacy.
Please note our publication dates represent when the newspapers go out for delivery. Meanwhile, bulk drop-offs of the paper around town are usually completed two to three days after publication. Please check out current and upcoming exhibitions for the most up-to-date gallery hours. There’s also an outdoor catering kitchen, a fine dining area, as well as an outdoor media room. Club James has it all— from state-of-the-art LCD screens to a concrete DJ booth with a concert-quality sound system. The poured concrete space has a glass wall overlooking Beverly Hills that can retract, giving the space an indoor/outdoor feel.
The James Goldstein house, besides serving as home to the elusive businessman, has also been used by various showbiz producers and directors. The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, as the property is now known, still maintains all the original designs and touches that John Lautner carefully created. What emerged was a two-decades-long partnership to remodel the house, which ended when John Lautner passed away in 1994.

This is in addition to an original pool in the main house which was completed in 1959. While it isn’t open to the public, one of the most interesting rooms in the home is the master bedroom. There is also a wall of windows that makes the space feel like the end of the world. Every room in the home, particularly the living room feels as if it belongs in a different era.
As the only design museum in the Upper Midwest, we seek to elevate design by generating awareness, promoting understanding, and sustaining its value for generations to come—carrying on the legacy of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Advisory board members each serve a three-year term that may be renewed once with approval of the advisory board. The advisory board receives no compensation other than reimbursement for direct expenses incurred for approved GMD activities. The GMD Advisory Board does not have a fiduciary responsibility and is not legally liable for improprieties related to GMD’s governance. GMD is part of the College of Design and governed by the UMN Board of Regents. The regents set UMN policies and delegate responsibility to the college to oversee GMD’s operation and responsible management.
The 4,500-square-foot Sheats-Goldstein residence was designed by John Lautner (one of the most noteworthy American architects of the twentieth century) and built between 1961 and 1963, in Los Angeles’ Beverly Crest neighborhood. The Goldstein Museum of Design is pleased to support PK-12 students seeking to study from the collection. Heather Harmon, executive director of Las Vegas Museum of Art, says the museum is tentatively slated to open in 2028 and has established a campaign fundraising goal of $150 million, as well as plans for an endowment.
